Beat the Heat!

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Despite being a California girl through and through, my favorite season has always been fall. For us Angelenos, fall is more like a mild summer; outside of a 10 degree temperature drop and a slight breeze, not much changes.

The heat can be oppressive in July and August and occasionally, you might find it stifling your options for clothing. Often, in such dense heat, I cannot be bothered to be creative and simply throw on the first items that I happen to touch while rifling through my closet (more and more often, I find myself reaching for my mesh Dimepiece dress, which by itself leaves little to the imagination, but has proven over time to be the perfect lightweight article of clothing).

My advice for you frustrated fashionistas would be to save your adorable Jeffrey Campbell platform wedges and pair it with our sassy La Mode crop top over a hip-hugging mini after the sun goes down. That slight shift in weather will allow you to break out your warmer clothing and make odd, but fun wardrobe pairings such as cut-off shorts with sheer tights and our ironically appropriate ‘Satan is Waiting’ crop top finished off with a pair of ass-kicking military style boots. Summer nights have been reminiscent of autumn lately and your local bar or restaurant could be the perfect place to debut your personal fall collection. You might find yourself pleasantly surprised at the warm reception you receive.

This is what fashion forcasters in the 60’s thought we’d look like in the year 2000. Sadly, they imagined us to be much cooler than we actually are. Sorry guys, we aren’t very creative, we wear clothes that either look plain and worn out or milder versions of 80’s fads. Nor do we visit Mars on the weekend wearing fabulous plastic ensembles. Gawd, take me back to the 60’s.

Landing soon. New DimePiece mixtape!

R E C O G N I Z E – The Annals of Outrageous Self-Invention

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

On the Street: The Annals of Outrageous Self-Invention, 1980-1990

On the Street” is a collection of photographs by Amy Arbus; the photographs presented here were selected from Arbus’s original photo-column that ran in “The Village Voice” between 1980 and 1990, a page that documented New York City’s downtown area’s most vibrant, creative dressers and personalities.

Now that Manhattan is only habitable for the very rich, many New Yorkers love to reminiscently look back to the truly mad and crazy ‘80s, an era when the Bowery could be quite dangerous and apartments were still fairly affordable. Back in the original 1980s and 1990s, Amy Arbus found the subjects for her extremely unique photographs mostly by just wandering around the Village, looking for people who were wearing visually creative and unusual outfits, a lot of polka dots, or stripes, or everyone wearing hats in the summertime. At the time, there was nothing else like it. Until Arbus’s photographic work, there hadn’t been any kind of record of the East Village scene when it was comprised of this particularly promising, hopeful group of talented, interesting people.

Describing her pictures from this 1980s to 1990s collection, Arbus stated, “In terms of the clothes, I think they were fantastic and funny and outrageous and silly….There was no kind of judgment going on at the time. Everyone wanted to be noticed, no matter what it was for. That’s completely gone. Being noticed is irrelevant now. You have to make such waves to be a success at things now that dressing differently may make an impression, but it’s not going to get you a career.”

Kiss the feet of: Pam Hogg

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Pam Hogg during the mid eighties, still fueled by the excitement and freedom of Punk and “The Blitz”, she infiltrated the elitist ranks of the conventional fashion world with her self-taught wild brand of outrageous creations, establishing a highly respected fashion career and continued success with her internationally renowned shop in the heart of London’s Soho.
Her one man show at the the Kelvingrove Art Galleries in 1990 was the first fashion design exhibition to be held in the grand Glasgow Museum and claimed one of the highest public attendances.
